What do we do?

The Al-Kindi Club is a society of Arab technology enthusiasts living and working in the UK. Through our monthly events we aim to bring the community together to celebrate the achievements of members of the Arab community working in the UK science and technology sector.

Our events are open to anyone, as this is not in any way an exclusive cultural society. Although the Al-Kindi Club is focussed on celebrating the work of a particular community, we warmly encourage anyone with an interest in technology to come along to our events. Our focus on the Arab community stems from a current lack of a platform for Arabs in technology to meet and get to know each other, and insufficient appreciation and celebration of their contribution to the UK technology sector.

Our meet-ups are informal monthly events, in which a speaker is invited to give a brief talk of his or her journey to-date in the technology sector. This is followed by a Q&A and time to network and meet fellow members and enthusiasts.

Who is Al Kindi?

Abu Yūsuf Yaʻqūb ibn ʼIsḥāq aṣ-Ṣabbāḥ al-Kindī (أبو يوسف يعقوب بن إسحاق الصبّاح الكندي; c. 801–873 AD) was an Arab philosopher, polymath, mathematician, physician and music theorist. Al-Kindi was the first of the Islamic peripatetic philosophers, and is hailed as the "father of Arab philosophy".

Al-Kindi was born in Kufa and educated in Baghdad. He became a prominent figure in the House of Wisdom, and a number of Abbasid Caliphs appointed him to oversee the translation of Greek scientific and philosophical texts into the Arabic language.

In the field of mathematics, al-Kindi played an important role in introducing Indian numerals to the Islamic world, and subsequently, relabeled as Arabic numerals, to the Christian world, along with Al-Khwarizmi. Al-Kindi was also one of the fathers of cryptography. Building on the work of Al-Khalil (717–786), Al-Kindi's book entitled Manuscript on Deciphering Cryptographic Messages gave rise to the birth of cryptanalysis, was the earliest known use of statistical inference, and introduced several new methods of breaking ciphers, notably frequency analysis.
